Event description

Description

This dynamic one-day workshop for professionals introduces the key concepts of the refugee settlement journey, cultural influences, complex stressors, and the factors that impact on the capacity of refugee families to find and sustain suitable housing in Australia. Using an interactive and experiential learning approach, you will explore how your culture and experiences affect the worker-client dynamic, and what you can do to make clients feel at home while engaging with your organisation and the housing environment

Participants will leave the room with an understanding of:

• The importance of cultural awareness when working with people from refugee backgrounds

• The diversity of refugees in Australia – local and historical context

• Complex stressors including the impact that culture, experience and conceptual differences play in clients capacity to find, maintain and retain housing

• Housing vulnerability and the impact on women, children, older people, and people with disabilities

• Power, privilege and unconscious bias

• Policy, services, supports and advocacy within the housing sector; and

• Practical knowledge and tools to apply when working with refugee families within the homelessness and wider service context
