Inquiring Together -

Children as Researchers

Mini-Course of 2 Sessions

Facilitated by Dannielle Gibson & Marilyn Hayward

What does it mean to research with children? How can we make our curriculum exciting and engaging for young learners and still meet the expectations of the Early Years Learning Framework and Australian Curriculum?

Inquiry projects offer opportunities for all children to learn in ways that strengthen their learning dispositions, provide contexts for applying their language, social, numeracy and literacy skills. Learners express their ideas, wonderings and theories in multiple ways.

We will explore ways of using inquiry approaches as a vehicle for children to develop and deepen understandings of their world, including

  • examining some of the key messages in contemporary research
  • developing strategies for learning for long term, sustained projects
  • understanding ways to plan and incorporate the approach into our own contexts
  • integrating the curriculum through project work
  • the role of the educator as co-researcher
  • exploring inquiry as a back drop to the process of pedagogical documentation
  • considering ways to assess children’s dispositions and engagement in the learning process
