Event description

Description

The Innovation In Aviation School Holiday Camp will see high school students coming together to innovate and create as they work with the Virgin Australia team to bring a bit of extra magic to flying.

From solving impossible challenges to planning global expansions, our Innovation Camp with Virgin Australia will see students spending three days working with the Virgin Australia team as they tackle a series of challenges to bring a bit of extra magic to flying. This three-day innovation camp has been designed to fuse STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with entrepreneurship, aviation and design thinking to provide a fun, fast-paced program for students as they work with industry mentors to innovate and create in the airline industry. Hosted at the Virgin Australia Headquarters in Brisbane, students will be touring the Virgin Village to explore all of the different roles in the airline industry and to meet some of the legends that are helping the airline soar to success. With no prior experience needed, this is a fantastic opportunity for passionate and driven young people looking to gain some experience innovating and creating in a real-world environment over their school holidays.

Schedule:

Day One

To kick off the camp, we'll be starting where all the magic happens at Brisbane Airport. Students will spend the first day of the camp working out of the Virgin Australia Lounge Cafe at the Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal as they look at gaining a better understanding of the customer. Students will be looking at how they can use user-centred design to redesign airport terminals, take the stress out of travelling and also solving a series of STEM challenges. The day will also, of course, be accompanied by a good deal of plane spotting with a great viewing window overlooking the runway.

Day Two

After building an understanding of the different types of customers that Virgin Australia services, day two will see students back at the Virgin Village getting an introduction to the Virgin Australia brand and looking at how an airline is created and competes with the other airlines in the market. Based at the Virgin Australia Headquarters in Bowen Hills, students will be hearing from a range of Virgin Australia team members whilst completing challenges ranging from using design thinking to redesign aircraft to using their STEM skills to solve an air traffic control challenge.

Day Three

After building an understanding of the customer and the flying experience, the final day will see participants working on a series of challenges to stretch their thinking as they explore some of the different roles in the airline. Students will be using their research skills to reseat over 200 passengers trying to get to LA after a cancelled flight, before looking at how they might expand Virgin Australia's route network. Students will then finish off the day by looking at how Virgin Australia can continue to lead the way for sustainability in the air.

FAQs

What time is the Innovation In Aviation Camp?

Our camp program will be running from 9am to 3pm each day. We will, however, have supervised free time for the students between 8:30am and 4pm should parents wish to drop students off early and pick them up later.

Who is the Innovation In Aviation Camp for?

Our Innovation in Aviation Camp has been designed for high school students (grade 7-12) with interests in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and design (and of course aviation). No prior knowledge is required, but we ask that students are passionate and willing to give all challenges their 100%.

What do we bring?

We ask that students bring their own lunch each day as well as a water bottle and a device if they have one. We will be providing snacks throughout the day as well as pens and paper.

What will students have at the end of the camp?

By the end of the camp students will be presenting their ideas formed by the challenge set to them around innovation in aviation. Through the camp they will be developing skills in critical and creative thinking, team work and collaboration, networking, pitching and design thinking. Throughout the camp, students will also have the opportunity to present their ideas to the Virgin Australia team!

How can participants get to Brisbane Airport?

We will be spending the first day at the Virgin Australia Lounge in the Brisbane Domestic Terminal. Students can be either dropped off at the airport, or we will have a group travelling with our facilitators via airtrain from Roma Street station.
