Event description

Description

We’re excited to have a very special guest for our first Perth event of 2019! Grab your tickets to hear from Michael Malone, founder of iiNet, and one of Perth, and Australia's, leading tech entrepreneurs and investors.

Hosted by Rohan McDougall, Director of Commercialisation at Curtin University.

While iiNet is a household name to most, many don't know its discovery as WA's first internet service provider (ISP). Widely deemed as a 'dial-up pioneer' and 'telco icon,' Michael Malone founded iiNet back in 1993 out of a suburban garage in Perth. Over the course of 20 years as CEO until his retirement in 2014, Michael grew the company to become Australia’s third largest ISP, expanded the team to over 2,500 staff, and served over one million households and businesses, with revenue of over $1 Billion.

Currently, Michael is Chair of the Board of ASX listed telecommunications company, Superloop, and Sky and Space Global. Since iiNet, he's also held board and director roles at a number of large companies including SpeedCast, Seven West Media, NBN Australia, and Axicom. Michael also founded Austism West, a charity supporting families of children on the spectrum, and is the founder of Diamond Cyber, a company established to provide military grade information security to the private sector.

In recent years Michael turned his talents to investing, with the formation of Phi Capital, with a focus on finding new investment opportunities in both start-up and established entities with track record looking to grow. The impressive and diverse portfolio includes Xero, Airtasker, Diamond Cyber, Superloop, and Seven West Media.

Michael epitomises the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, making him an extraordinary guest for our first Perth breakfast of 2019. We’re excited to discuss his illustrious career, hear his successes and failures, and what advice he has for the next wave of WA founders.
