About this event

Welcome to the Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) Training Registration Page.

The Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) is an initiative from the Department of Health to support clinicians in matching a person's treatment needs with the right intensity of mental health support, at the right time. This 2-hour workshop provides opportunity for you to learn more about IAR initiative and how to use the Decision Support Tool (IAR- DST).

Audience:

Training is designed for the health workforce involved in the mental health assessment and referral process including GPs, GP Registrars, other clinicians, intake teams, mental health commissioned providers and service providers (within the Murry PHN catchment)

Background

The Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR)Guidance and Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) is a National initiative from the Department of Health on establishing effective systems for the initial assessment and referral of individuals presenting with mental health conditions in primary health care settings by supporting GP's and other clinicians to determine the most appropriate level of care for a person seeking mental health support. It is designed to provide:

  • Advice relating to initial assessment and intake considering eight holistic domains that are important for referral decision making in mental health.
  • A description of evidence-based services by level of intensity (the five levels of care)
  • Criteria to assist with matching an individual to a level of care that is most likely to meet the individual's treatment needs and recovery goals (the IAR-DST)

The IAR training will run for two hours and topics focus on:

  • Introduction to IAR and the development of the National Guidance
  • Orientation to the domains, levels of care, and decision support tool (DST)
  • Clinical judgement and supported decision-making
  • Application of the IAR in assessment and intake settings (practical activity using a case vignette)
  • Local resources and updates on mental health referral processes

Part one of the workshop provides the background and orientation to stepped care, the initial assessment and referral process, and the decision support tool. In part two of the workshop, participants engage in practical activity focusing on applying the IAR decision support tool to the prepared scenario.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the training participants will be able to

  • Describe the development process of the Initial Assessment and Referral Initiative
  • Describe the 8 Initial Assessment Domains of the Decision Support Tool
  • Define the 5 levels of care and provide examples of mental health services that belong to each level of care
  • Apply the IAR Guidance to use the decision support tool to generate a recommended level of care.
  • Apply the supported decision-making strategies to involve the patient in referral decision-making.
