Description

2017 was Australia's worst flu season on record with over 217000 laboratory confirmed cases. Each year, seasonal influenza causes significant mortality and morbidity in the community.

This session will provide GPs and vaccine providers with an update on influenza and the vaccine program for 2018.

SPEAKERS:

Professor Robert Booy MBBS (Hons), MSc, MD, FRACP, FRCPCH, Head of Clinical Research, National Centre for Immunisation Research

Dr Kari Jarvinen, Metro South Public Health Unit Physician

TOPICS:

  • Will 2018 be a better year for flu prevention?
  • Serological testing and management with antivirals
  • Influenza virus, transmission, infection control
  • Identifying high risk groups and eligibility
  • Local epidemiology

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Improve patient confidence by understanding the latest evidence
  • Update knowledge on diagnosis and management of influenza
  • Develop a system to identify patients eligible for the influenza vaccine
