Description

Industrial Control Systems: Next Frontier for Cyber Attacks

During the early nineteenth century industrial revolution machines were invented and developed to automate a significant portion of the production resource of textiles products and machinery used in the construction of infrastructure services. This innovation increased the efficiency and productivity of the production environments while significantly reducing the need for human intervention. These industrial control systems (ICS) are used across various industries and have a range of applications, including chemical processing plants, manufacturing plants, water utilities, energy utilities, and oil and gas platforms. Many industries now integrate computer systems and network communication technology into their ICS to manage, monitor, and automate the operation of the processes, and this creates a significant risk with regard to the safe operation of these systems. In light of recent successful cyber-attacks on the ICS of power plant distribution grids in Ukraine, and water treatment plants in the Unites States, cyber security is currently the primary security concern for business that operate ICS.

This presentation will focus on the security threats on the ICS networks, the consequences of a cyber-attacks on these systems, and will give an overview on past attacks and how the malicious actors attempted to attack the industrial control systems.

Presented by: Mr Paresh Kerai

Paresh Kerai is a security engineer and researcher, specialising in network security and computer forensics. Employed as a Systems Engineer, he was over 6 years of computer and networks security experience and is currently enrolled in Doctor of Philosophy at Edith Cowan University. His research focus is the security of Modbus protocol used in critical infrastructure systems and the security framework of industrial control systems. He is also interested in computer forensics, wireless security, IoT devices and network architecture security.
