Discover how to green your living and workspaces.

Patrick Honan, Horitculturist, will deliver a course of 6 interactivworkshops around the theme of indoor gardeningfor 1.5-2 hours across 6 weeks from March 19, 2019.

The sessions will commence at 6pm, and provide an introduction as well as hands on experience of taking care of your own indoor garden. 

The course is an opportunity to meet your neighbours living in the City of Melbourne, explore the Mission to Seafarers and enjoy getting your hands dirty.

Week 1: Introduction to growing plants indoors

    Why grow plants indoors
    What are indoor plants? (comparedto conventional plants)
    Where do indoor plants grow?
    Health benefits of growing plants indoors
    Different characteristics and needs of indoor plants

 

Week 2: Containerised growing

    Different types of growing media
    Understanding growing media components, functions and chemistry
    Differences in pots and containers
    Water
    Nutrients & fertiliser
    DIYgrowing media workshop, potting-on tutorial

 

Week 3: Light

    Understanding different light ranges in an indoor environment (the Mission)
    Measuring light (high and low tech)
    Using a light meter
    Researching light needs of plants
    Classifying plants by light needs
    Installing plants accordingt o light needs


 Week 4: Common issues

    Pathogens, pests and diseases
    How to identify common issues
    How to troubleshoot problems
    Ongoing plant maintenance, developing a schedule

 

Week 5: Acquiring plants

    Sourcing plants
    Finding rare plants
    Determining value and health of plant stock for sale
    Recommended plants
    DIY propagation practical

 

Week 6: Novel applications

    Build a native plant terrarium workshop
    Sick plant trouble shooting
