About this Event

A panel discussion on the colonial impacts of the Australian education system & lack of First Nations history, lead by Indigenous students.

Have you ever wondered what High School is like for Indigenous students?

Join us for a panel discussion highlighting the lived experiences of four First Nations students in the education system.

We offer an insightful dialogue into the daily lives of blak teenagers: living within an institution, negotiating casual racism and curriculum bias; and we highlight their immense strength against adversity.

The current education system is falling short, alienating and disempowering blak students in our country. We are calling for reordering of western education, and we acknowledge that First Nations histories are central to this aim. We call for unity, community and self-determination, for acknowledgement of history, understanding of First Nations students’ experiences, and advocacy for national healing within the education system.

We invite community leaders, students, teachers and anyone working in and around the education system and general public to join us to ask these big questions and respond to this call to action.

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today” Malcolm X

Special performances by Alice Skye and Aaron B.

We will be hosting this event at Schoolhouse Studios on the stolen land of the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respect to their elders past, present and emerging and recognise them as the custodians of the land on which we live and work.

*If you are First Nations you have free entry (please email us your name so we can put you on the list info@becollectiveculture.com)

*This space is accessible and we will have an Auslan interpreter.

*This is an alcohol free event
