Event description
A Lake Mac GLAM Workshop

About this event

There is increasing awareness in the sector of the importance of working with Indigenous peoples and priorities in libraries. A key area for libraries to consider is the development of services that meet the needs of local Indigenous peoples and communities, as well as ways that promote and support Indigenous Australian culture.

This workshop will focus on methods to engage and support Indigenous peoples and communities with their library and information needs. By establishing a foundation of knowledge to support and promote Indigenous Australian histories and culture, participants will be equipped to build library programs and collections that are responsive to Indigenous people’s diverse needs.

Training objectives and outcomes

  • Understand the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures and how this relates to your library.
  • Become aware of the background issues and trends that exist in relation to information access for Indigenous Australian peoples.
  • Gain an insight into the protocols, principles and practices which develop engagement to best meet the needs of Indigenous Australian peoples.
  • Identify ways to develop and manage a range of resources, in a variety of formats including print and digital materials, which represent and give voice to Indigenous Australian peoples and histories.
  • Develop an understanding of the referral services and recommended readings relating to Indigenous Australian priorities and support in the sector.

Pre and Post Course Survey

A pre-survey questionnaire will be circulated to gather information on participants feedback on what they would like to get out of the course. Attendees will also be invited to participate in formal evaluation of the course as part of the research project (UTS ETH20-4681 - "Building Indigenous services and collections in libraries: Identifying the impact of a staff capacity development program"
