Event description

Description

Dr Jeff Redding will deliver the latest 'Keywords for India' lecture, which will explore recent controversies concerning 'Muslim courts' and Muslim divorce. Dr Redding will analyse why the regulation of these private practices have come to be seen by the Indian state as crucially important to its own legitimacy

This lecture will argue that more attention needs to be paid to how we define and recognise what it means for something or some persons to be a 'court', including the multiple ways in which courts operate – sometimes visibly, sometimes invisibly – in everyday social life. Indeed, courts – imperial, institutional, and interpersonal – are everywhere, if we just learn to look and listen in ways less beholden to the state.

Dr Jeff Redding is a New Generation Network Scholar at the Australia India Institute and a Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Law School. Jeff’s research interests are in the areas of comparative law and religion, Islamic law, legal pluralism, family law, and law & sexuality.
