Event description

Description

The Inaugural Ruth Gall Memorial Lecture celebrates the life and achievements of Associate Professor Ruth Gall (1923-2017), the first female appointed Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University (1969), and the first female Head of School in Chemistry (1978-1980). Ruth passed away in July 2017 at 93 years of age. Ruth’s former students, colleagues and family have remembered her as a wonderful teacher and mentor – many of her nieces and nephews were inspired to pursue tertiary education due to her encouragement and advice.

We are honoured to welcome Professor Jennifer Martin, Director of the Drug Design Centre at Griffith University to present the Inaugural Lecture. Professor Martin is a vocal advocate for the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) pilot program that promotes gender equity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) disciplines.

The lecture will be accompanied by the unveiling of a portrait of A/Prof. Gall by local artist Dr Kate Gradwell.

This event will be held on International Women’s Day, March 8th 2018, and is an initiative of the School of Chemistry's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The event is supported by the SAGE program and the Women in Science (WiSci) project within the University of Sydney.
