High Performance Work Systems in Healthcare: Opportunities or Constraints for Improved Patient Care?

Professor Pauline Stanton

The lecture focuses on the challenges of managing health professionals in large complex environments. In particular it draws upon the high performance work systems literature and applies these concepts through quantitative and qualitative research in a number of Australian hospitals. The seminar identifies some of the key challenges in relation to recruitment and retention, reward and performance of staff in healthcare, alongside issues such as transformational leadership, social identification and employee consultation and decision making. The seminar concludes that high performance work practices can lead to improved patient care but need to be linked to good resources, supportive leadership, employee engagement through having a voice in decision making, control over the pace and quality of work and identification with the team.
