Description

Join UON alumnus Yasser Hamed for an inspiring evening as we discover how Yasser’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical) took him to lead procedural animation in the role of Crowds Supervisor at Walt Disney Animation Studios and credited on the Oscar winning films Happy Feet, Big Hero 6, and Frozen and the Oscar nominated films Wreck It Ralph and Moana.

Yasser will be in conversation with UON academic Dr Simon Weaving, lecturer in the School of Creative Industries at UON. Simon has a background in both the creative and business sides of cinema, journalism and theatre, and is the former director of the Canberra International Film Festival from 2009-2012.

More about Yasser...

Crowds supervisor, Procedural Animation | Walt Disney Animation
Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) 2003

Artist Supervisor at Walt Disney Animation, UON alumnus Yasser Hamed (Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical 2003), has been granted permanent residence in the USA based on the category of 'Alien of extraordinary ability in the arts or sciences' reserved for the likes of Nobel Prize winners and the few who have reached the top of their field and international acclaim.

Yasser has worked directly with Academy Award-winning directors, producers and artists and is responsible for the research and development behind producing high end digital effects and animation for the feature films Happy Feet, Beowulf, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Alice in Wonderland, Tangled (Rapunzel), Wreck-It Ralph and the blockbuster Academy Award-winning Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Moana. He is the youngest recipient of UON’s Newton-John Alumni Award (2010) recognising innovation and creativity in improving cultural life.

Yasser’s leadership role at Disney Animation Studios revolves around 'look development' and physical simulation techniques to make digital effects more realistic; the procedural animation team was formed around the skills of Yasser in a fast-paced sector, and whilst studying engineering at university, Yasser describes himself as an ‘artist’ leading the animation team: “I never thought studying fluid mechanics at UON would bring me here to Disney!”
