ANU/CANBERRA TIMES MEET THE AUTHOR EVENT

Jacqui Lambie will be in conversation with Alex Sloan on Jacqui's new book Rebel with a Cause. The event will be chaired by The Canberra Times' Karen Hardy.

Rebel with a Cause, subtitled 'You can't keep a bloody Lambie down - my story from soldier to senator and beyond'. is the candid memoir of Jacqui Lambie - outspoken, unexpected and refreshingly honest.

'During her time in Parliament, Jacqui Lambie was the most authentic, heartfelt and unscripted voice in the Senate. She's been a tireless and high effective campaigner for the things she passionately believes in, things she's lived through and not just hot-button issues raised by focus groups. So, for anyone who knows Jacqui, her resignation from the Senate is just an interruption in her unique career, representing Australians who've previously had little access to the corridors of power: the veterans, the single mums, the welfare recipients, the families of ice addicts.

Her autobiography is not a political book. In fact, politics barely gets a mention until the final chapters. It's the story of her life as an ordinary working class girl from Tasmania, and her journey through the army, her enforced medical retirement after 10 years following a horrendous back injury, her medical discharge, her fight to get adequate treatment and compensation from the DVA, her battles with addiction and depression, her struggles to raise two kids as a single mother, the slow rebuilding of her life that saw her determined to prevent other people experiencing the bureaucratic-inflicted torment that she was forced to survive, and her roller-coaster ride as a politician. The subject matter is real and often raw, but Jacqui handles it with humour, honesty and dignity.'

Alex Sloan is the 2017 Canberra Citizen of the Year and is one of Canberra's best-known and loved personalities. She retired from the ABC radio after 27 years at the end of 2016.

Karen Hardy is Senior Journalist at The Canberra Times.

Pre-event book signing will be available from 5.30pm and again after the event.
