Improving parental escalation of care in an emergency department

Safer Care Victoria's Paediatric Clinical Network and Women and Children Centre of Clinical Excellence are pleased to invite you to an interactive virtual discussion on parental recognition and escalation of care for the deteriorating child in the emergency department occurring on 19 July 2022, 8 am - 9 am.

Many paediatric sepsis sentinel events have similar themes related to the parents/carers difficulty in being heard when they were concerned about their child's deterioration whilst in the emergency department.

The Safer Care Victoria Parental Recognition of the Deteriorating Child Quality Improvement Pilot Project co-designed, tested, and trialled tools to recognise, escalate and respond to the deteriorating child in the emergency department. It included parents/carers as part of the treating team and a critical component for providing timely treatment to lead to better outcomes for children.

This session will provide an opportunity for participants to collaborate with representatives from any health service across the state to:

• ask questions about the project and learnings from the pilot health services

• discuss learnings from their health service about parental escalation of care for children in emergency departments, i.e. enablers and barriers to overcome

• learn from each other about innovative ways to ensure that parents have access to systems to escalate care for their child if they are worried they are getting worse and that they know how to enact these.

If your health service did not participate as a pilot site in the project, please view the pilot sites' final presentation video to familiarise yourself with the improvement work undertaken by these health services before joining the session.
