Event description
Planning for climate change's impact on infrastructure assets

About this Event

Applying Practice Note 12.1 “Impact of Climate Change on the Useful Life of Infrastructure”

As changes in the climate start to hit home asset managers will need to consider the likely impacts on infrastructure assets. Increased temperature, heatwaves and sea levels, higher storm, rainfall and bushfire intensities, and changes to rainfall and flood will increasingly affect the useful life of infrastructure at a material level.

Last year IPWEA launched Practice Note 12.1 “Impact of Climate Change on the Useful Life of Infrastructure” to provide clear guidance for asset managers on how to integrate these changes into asset management plans and budgets. This presentation will follow the steps in the Practice Note decision tree by providing:• An overview of the expected changes in the climate for Adelaide to 2100 (with a focus on increased temperatures, heatwaves and storms);

• The likely impacts of these changes on the useful life of assets;

• Options for adaptation; and

• The availability of quantitative models.

Practical examples using assets relevant to the region will be worked through for each of the three Climate Change Factors (location, changes to the climate, existing climate change adaptation) and four Asset Factors (expected usage, physical wear and tear, technical or commercial obsolescence, legal or similar limits). There will be time for questions and further discussion at the end of the presentation.

The presenter is Dr. Jacqueline Balston who has been an applied climatologist for the past 25 years. During this time she has researched the impacts of climate variability and climate change on agriculture, natural resources, ecosystems, emergency management and the built environment across Australia.

She currently works as an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at University of South Australia and as a private Climate Consultant to local, state and federal governments and other organisations nationally
