Description

A Cocktail Evening with the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels of Papua New Guinea

Just a few hours from the coast of Australia, where our modern society innocently enjoys almost zero Tuberculosis infection Papua New Guineans' face the highest incidence of the disease on a per capita basis than any other population in the world. This is a staggering fact given the knowledge and medicine available throughout most of the world today. As a consequence of contraction far too many of our near neighbours lose their lives far too young having obvious devastating effects on families and community.

While this unfortunate trend has continued for a long time a committed few believed that change should be affected and lives saved. Beginning with the hypothesis that if Australia can have no incidence of TB then the same ought be a minimum expected outcome for our Brothers and Sisters in PNG we began to ask questions.

We have met some incredibly generous and committed people during the early stages of our research and largely due to their hard work we have seen some great progress. A milestone of this work is the opening of a TB dedicated hospital ward in Popondetta in Oro Provence, PNG. We are very proud of the small part we have played in what we hope will be big change in the fight against TB in PNG and hope to spread the good word.

Through Network Kokoda this and other powerful support projects are underway in PNG improving the lives of its wonderful people. We would be delighted to share some of these stories with you so we are hosting a function on March... at the Borough of hawthorn. We have invited six Papua New Guinean lads to join us, 4 of whom will be participating in the Oxfam 100km event the following week. They are coming to share some of their life experiences with us and perhaps even a song. Two of these boys are in fact direct descendants of war time Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, they all have wonderful stories of their lives growing up in the jungle of the Owen Stanley Range.

The following day you will have the opportunity to join us at the Kokoda Memorial at the base of the 1000 Steps for a Dawn Service and a walk with our Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels.
