Event description

Description

I am a South-West Exhibitionist is an inclusive project spanning ten months from mid- September 2017 and supported by the Shire of Manjimup and Country Arts WA.

STAGE ONE

Surviving the Arts and Media with Practical Steps Tough Love and Good Old Common Sense

A self-marketing workshop for visual artists presented by arts consultant, curator and media personality, Paula Silbert. This two-day workshop delivers essential professional development skills for emerging, mid-career and established visual artists.

Sessions include

  • Being an Exhibitionist – solo, group, pop-up, open studio
  • Finding your Fans and leading them to your exhibition
  • OMG! My art doesn’t speak for itself! (What your clients, fans, and media expect you to be able to say. Media Releases, speeches, interviews, gallery tours and Artist Statements).
  • Brushing up your Five Year Plan and getting ready to succeed
  • 40 Really, Really, Really Important Things for Visual Artists To Know.

Participants receive practical, relevant work books and documents that they’ll refer to long after the workshop has finished. (Available to workshop participants only). You’ll learn the necessary tools to maximize exposure for your practice or event. Participants receive individualised and personalised advice throughout the sessions. Invaluable working partnerships with other participants evolve.

STAGE 2.

South-West artists are invited to work with Shire of Manjimup appointed mentor, Fiona Sinclair. Fiona has been a practicing professional artist for twenty years. She coordinated and now manages the cultural tourism attraction Understory Art and Nature Trail. In her role as Secretary for Southern Forest Arts she has also managed the Painted Tree Gallery (Northcliffe) for over ten years.

Fiona will support artists as they curate, install, catalogue and promote their work in the Project’s Makerspace installations and two separate Wild Card exhibitions to be held in the Manjimup Art Gallery and the Painted Tree Gallery in 2018 (Dates TBC).

Fiona is available for a number of free mentoring sessions from October 2017 - March 2018. These sessions are transferable if participants don’t wish to avail themselves of the opportunity.

STAGE 3

The aim of I am a South-West Exhibitionist is to provide practical steps for practitioners and arts workers to establish peer support through a social media network for workshop participants and generate long-term benefits for the South West artist communities.

Fiona Sinclair, the Shire of Manjimup appointed mentor will coordinate a half-day ‘wrap-up session’ to gauge feedback about the I am a South-West Exhibitionist project; this will include providing data about exhibitions and promotional opportunities generated since the Surviving the Arts and Media with Practical Steps Tough Love and Good Old Common Sense workshop in September 2017 (i.e. Stage 1). Planning for future professional development opportunities will be encouraged at this session.
