Event description

Description

Learning Outside the Classroom

The world beyond your classroom can provide all the ingredients you need to create amazing real-world learning experiences for students.

This conference will help unpack the many ways teaching and learning can be enhanced by taking students outside. We will explore safe ways of engaging students in a variety of outdoor contexts that will support learning throughout the curriculum.

Learning Outside the Classroom will provide participants with practical ideas and pedagogical approaches to taking learning outside. We will explore a range of hand-on multidisciplinary teaching and learning activities that will build skills and knowledge within subject-specific areas. We will investigate ways of supporting the sustainability cross curriculum priority and the integration of mobile technology.

This conference is led by the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre team. Collectively the centres staff have over 80 years of expertise in leading and developing curriculum focused teaching and learning programs in outdoor contexts.

This conference is aimed at people working with Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6 students.

Please note that there is limited parking available at Field of Mars. The IEU is offering transport to and from the venue from Central Station. If you are interested in using the IEU transport please make sure to tick YES to this option when purchasing your ticket.

This event will take place outside; it will go ahead regardless of weather conditions. Field of Mars is prepared to deal with inclement weather.

WORKSHOPS

Science fieldwork solutions

This hands-on workshop deals with practical strategies for creating safe, fun and meaningful fieldwork investigations that efficiently support depth studies. Coordination of first-hand investigation and fieldwork activities in an outdoor setting encourages scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills that students can conduct individually or collaboratively.

Most of the workshop will take place in the bush. Participants will learn to plan fieldwork workflows that integrate the following:
• Flipped learning methods that support higher-order fieldwork
• Cunning tips for processing and analysing data in the field
• Strategies for dealing with different learning styles
• Reverse engineering fieldwork with depth study assessment in mind
• Planning for a skills assessment focus rather than content
• Safety and group management in the field

Communicating Naturally

This dynamic workshop will explore the numerous possibilities for developing effective communication products using mobile technology. Using iPads and app smashing learning can be demonstrated in a differentiated and engaging way. This workshop will take place both inside and out in the Field of Mars gardens. Participants will use a variety of tools to construct animations, movies, digital books and image based campaigns. Tips and tricks with group management and using mobile technology outside will also be shared.

Reimagining geography fieldwork

Take away the classroom walls and adventure into rugged Sydney bushland to engage with worksheet free geographic fieldwork. Develop questions for inquiry and use both digital and non-digital tools to investigate, record, process and communicate geographical information. This hands-on workshop will help you rethink and reimagine how contemporary fieldwork can be used to meet syllabus outcomes in new and creative ways.

Completing IEU Environment Conference 2019: Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6 - Learning Outside the Classroom will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 3.3.2; 3.4.2; 6.2.2; 6.3.2 and 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
