Description

Learning Outside the Classroom

“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.” - Sir David Attenborough

The world beyond your classroom or centre can provide all the ingredients you need to create amazing real-world learning experiences. These experiences can help build the capacity of students to positively contribute to the development of a sustainable society.

This fun and hands-on conference will help unpack the many ways teaching and learning can be enhanced though outdoor experiences. We will examine current research and safe ways of engaging students in a variety of outdoor contexts to support learning throughout the curriculum and the sustainability cross curriculum priority.

This conference will provide participants with practical ideas and fun pedagogical approaches to taking learning outside. We will explore a range of hand-on multidisciplinary teaching and learning activities that will build skills and knowledge within subject-specific areas including Geography, Science and English, as well as examining Wellbeing.

Participants will be able to choose from a variety of sessions including worksheet free fieldwork, natural science, English outside and outdoor play.

This conference will be delivered by the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre team, led by Principal Steve Papp, Apple Distinguished Educator. Collectively the centres’ staff have over 80 years of expertise in leading and developing curriculum focused teaching and learning programs in outdoor contexts.

This conference is aimed at people working with Early Stage 1, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 students. There will be another conference in the same location in October for Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6 educators.

Please note that there is limited parking available at Field of Mars. The IEU is offering transport to and from the venue from Central Station. If you are interested in using the IEU transport please make sure to tick YES to this option when purchasing your ticket.

For an extra $10 you may add an IEU branded reusable coffee cup to your ticket. Your coffee cup will be available to pick up at the event.

This event will take place outside; it will go ahead regardless of weather conditions. Field of Mars is prepared to deal with inclement weather.

WORKSHOPS:

Real Geography

This session will provide participants with a range of practical ideas, tools and methods for undertaking geography fieldwork in their school or centre grounds, the local area and places further afield. Featuring a blend of digital learning and creative fieldwork techniques participants will create a communication product that explores the amazing natural features of the Field of Mars Reserve.

Nature Play

There is a growing movement worldwide that recognises the value of taking children into nature for structured and/or unstructured play opportunities. Nature play can help young people develop deep connections to nature. During this session we will look at practical ways of utilising natural areas to engage children in nature play. Requiring no expensive materials or fancy furniture participants will investigate, create, inquire, observe, make predictions and problem solve. STEM done naturally.

Natural Science

Focusing on a variety of strands from the new K-6 Science Syllabus participants will be introduced to the skills of working scientifically through scientific inquiry. They will use a range of data collection and processing tools to conduct practical investigations of living things and other sustainability concepts.

English Outside

Campaigns use powerful persuasive texts to captivate and position their target audiences. During this session participants will learn how to take the English syllabus outdoors while creating beautiful video imagery, sound and persuasive words to inspire, motivate and educate. Participants will explore how point of view is shaped in environmental campaigns through digital camera work, editing and persuasive text to construct a communication product intended to lead to positive change. They will use a range of video making equipment, including iPads, to develop a sustainability or nature-based campaign.

Completing IEU Environment Conference 2019: Early Stage 1, Stage 1 and Stage 2 - Learning Outside the Classroom will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 3.3.2; 3.4.2; 6.2.2; 6.3.2 and 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
