Abstract

Australia’s space industry is set for some exciting developments. Access to space is becoming less restricted and more commercially viable, with the aim to grow our technical capability. The International Astronautical Congress being held in Adelaide will give focus to the space industry in Australia and the range of interesting problems that need to be solved in the immediate future. So what does the future for space technologies look like? And from the student perspective, how can we best position ourselves to take part in the commercial side of space services? This talk centres on the steps I have taken to understand the aerospace industry in Australia, its start-up culture, and the challenging areas in need of innovation and development. I will focus on the concepts proposed in my submission of the Dynamic Airspace System in the HeroX Sky For All challenge, and what led me to being a part of the new space start-up NodeSat, a company seeking to provide disruptive technology in the field of data and communication for small satellites and UAVs.

About the Speaker

Jade Chantrell is a senior Aerospace Engineering and Physics student. For her honours project, she worked on the University of Adelaide’s cube satellite, SUSat, in its final year before launch. She was a category winner for the 2017 Australian Space Prize in Data Processing and Electronics. Other projects include NASA Tournament Lab’s Sky For All innovation challenge, to design an air traffic management system of the future, which placed 3 rd internationally. Jade also has technical experience working as an intern at CSIRO, as a research assistant at the University of Adelaide and a flight simulator lab demonstrator for third-year aeronautical engineering students.
