Identifying & Responding to Family Violence, workshop #02

1 Day workshop, Friday 27th April

Presenters: Sheridon Byrne and Scott Mills

This full-day training is designed to give AOD workers foundational skills and confidence to identify and work alongside clients who are experiencing or who have previously experienced Family Violence. The training will provide worker’s with introductory skills to identify the risks associated with Family Violence and knowledge to support clients in creating safety plans for themselves and their children.

The training will also focus on how to make appropriate referrals for those clients who are not yet engaged with Family Violence Specialist services as well as contextualizing the newly created role of the Family Violence Advisor to the AOD sector and how to best work with these advisors.

Attendees will be provided with an introduction into best practice approaches when working with family violence perpetrators. AOD workers will be provided with strategies in engaging family violence perpetrators in a safe and non-collusive way. Strategies for worker safety will be discussed and embedded into activities and role-plays throughout the day.

Participants will come away with increased skills and knowledge to help their clients who are experiencing Family Violence as well as an understanding of how a collaborative practice between AOD and Family Violence service sectors could be utilized.

Sheridon Byrne is a trainer within the Workforce Development team, delivering the accredited courses for Recognizing and Responding to Family Violence as well as training workers in how to use the Common Risk Assessment Framework ( CRAF ) both for specialist and non-specialist workers. Sheridon has a working history of more than 15 years in the Community Sector Training and Coordinating in Generalist Women’s Services, Disability and Specialist Family Violence Services. Prior to joining DVRCV in March 2017 she was the Service Delivery Coordinator and Trainer for WIRE Women’s Information & Referral Exchange in Melbourne and she trained the accredited Family Violence units within TAFE. Prior to that she worked within women’s refuge and on the Family Violence crisis line in Qld, DVConnect. Sheridon is an accredited trainer and has completed a Bachelor of Science – Psychology.

Scott Mills has a degree in psychology and Masters degree in Counselling. He has worked in a number of roles in the past 10 years focussing on addressing mens’ use of family violence. These roles include mens family violence case management, mens behaviour change facilitation, family violence program coordination and supervision. Scott’s most recent role was as the family violence practice leader for Relationships Australia Victoria. He currently works for No To Violence in the Workforce Development Team.

Who should register? This training is suitable for professionals who work with victims of Family Violence and who may play a role in initial risk assessment and be a part of an integrated risk management plan, but for whom responses to family violence is not their core business. This training will assume some prior knowledge or training in the prevalence, impacts and identifiers of Family Violence.

Cost: $220 (Payable by credit card only).

Lunch: A light lunch including a vegetarian selection is provided.

Cancellation Policy: If your circumstances change and you no longer can attend this event after you have registered please email training@turningpoint.org.au no later than one (1) week prior to the event to cancel and/or be issued with a full refund. A refund will not be issued if notification has not been received within this time frame and you will be required to pay for the event.
