Event Details

Design thinking is a human-centred methodology for innovation that combines creative and analytical approaches, and requires collaboration across disciplines. Design thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning, to explore possibilities of what could be, and to create desired outcomes that benefit the end user. A design mindset is not problem-focused; its solution focused, and action oriented. It involves both analysis and imagination.

The objective of the Idea Pitching Workshop is to build skills in developing and pitching innovative ideas. In particular, how to:

Develop design thinking concepts and processes for ideas that lead to innovations

  • Develop and deliver persuasive proposal techniques for innovations
  • Identify and involve the right people in designing, developing and delivering innovative Ideas

This workshop will be 2-hours long where no artistic talent, design experience, or knowledge about design thinking is required at all! You just need a willingness to participate - it'll be fun, noisy and highly interactive!

* This event is for government employees only*

James Young

Catalyst Advisor ACT at Catalyst Exchange Pty Ltd

James connects people from the public, private, research and not-for-profit sectors who want to see real benefits from innovation. Outcomes include increased collaboration, which in turn leads to practical innovation and ultimately high performance. To this end he chairs the Collaborative Innovation Forum in the ACT. He also helps organisations build and operate innovation initiatives that support innovative people.

James’ driver is summed up by Dr Suess:

Unless someone [an innovator] like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr Seuss, The Lorax.

A little bit of background

James has a wide network of colleagues in Australian agricultural policy/research, federal government innovation and staff education, private sector innovation and public speaking.

From 2003 to 2014 at the Department of Agriculture, James worked at an operational level, at a policy level and strategically—managing the departmental wide innovation initiative: Innovation Generation (I‐Gen).

James’ whole--‐of--‐government involvement also included an active presence on the Public Service Innovation Network. This included co--‐chairing and chairing the organising committee for APS Innovation Events in 2012 and 2013 respectively. He sat on the strategic working group for the Australian Public Sector Innovation Indicators Project (APSII). This was led by the--‐then Department of Innovation, Industry, Research, Science and Tertiary Education, and the University of Tasmania. James has shared methods for establishing innovation systems in large organisations at many government and private sector/research agencies. These include at least 15 federal government departments/agencies, Westpac Bank, NICTA, and the University of Tasmania.

Working across government and with private and research sector agencies James developed a passion for helping people in large organisations innovate, i.e., create, develop and implement ideas that have a positive impact.
