Build Strong Reading Identities

in Preschool

Facilitated by Lisa Burman

This is a workshop specifically designed for educators working with 3-5 year olds in a Kindergarten/Preschool setting.

Reading is a complex process of constructing meaning.  It begins long before children can read conventional print - long before they can decode words. This workshop will explore how empowering it is to begin our intentional teaching from a reading identity perspective - for children, families and educators.

You'll learn ways to intentionally create opportunities for children to:

- use their agency as readers

- to develop understandings of how reading influences and supports our day to day living

- see themselves as readers and build a strong disposition to engage with texts

- develop strategies for meaning making with texts

This workshop will help you to explore the following Literacy Indicators & Key Elements (Dept for Ed SA):

I engage with texts and make meaning

  • choose texts for particular purposes
  • respond meaningfully to symbols and texts
  • understand that texts convey meaning
  • infer meaning from familiar texts

I understand the language of my world

  • respond to sounds and patterns in speech and stories
  • demonstrate critical understandings of texts
  • understand what has been communicated
  • actively inquire to make meaning

Please bring 3-4 picture books, including at least one information book.
