Event description

Description

If you ever had an idea for a start-up, this is your chance to make it a reality . . . The Centre for 21st Century Humanities is partnering with Maitland City Council in offering a Humanities Startups workshop for University of Newcastle students and staff and members of the Maitland Multicultural community on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 June, in the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. There is no charge. Participants with a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background, and those with a Maitland connection, are especially welcome

This is a follow-up to a similar, very popular event held last year. There will be a short course on business models, input from various start-up experts, a brainstorming session, then on the second day pitches from participants and a panel of judges will advise the Centre on which projects might be offered further support. Three ventures from last year are now in development – a scheme for ethics ratings for businesses, a design research consultancy, and the year-long impersonation of Marie Antoinette you may have heard of.

The idea is to bring humanities know-how and creativity into an enterprise (social-good or commercial) which has a chance of flourishing in the world outside the academy. To bring something entirely new into being! Even if you don’t in the end make a pitch, or your pitch is not supported, this will be a wonderful learning experience, or so our participants last year told us.
