Description

Human Trafficking – A Global Crime Against Humanity

Trafficking in persons is a grave violation of human rights, affecting thousands of individuals worldwide, targeting mainly women and children. Almost every country in the world is implicated in human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination.

In addition to being one of the fastest growing organized crimes in the world, human trafficking is a ruthless and a thriving business. This industry with billions of dollars in net worth, pushes millions of adults and children into commercial sexual servitude, forced labour and bonded labour.

Traffickers choose to trade in human beings because there is low start-up cost, high profit, minimal risk, and large demand. For the traffickers, human beings have one added advantage over drugs – they can be sold again and again.

The increasing dominance and wide spread of trafficking represents a major breakdown of international law. Bilateral and multilateral treaties, the UN Conventions and protocols have, at best, served symbolic purposes and produced minimal results.

It is high time that the international community moves forward towards bringing the perpetrators to justice and thereby eradicate this crime. Perhaps a day will come when the International Criminal Court will action Article 7 of the Rome Statute in motion in order to end the trafficking menace.

In each one-hour talk, there will be a presentation by one of our Professors, followed by an interactive discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and engage with our Professors over refreshments.
