Event description
Human Rights Policy Workshop

About this event

This workshop goes beyond introductory training on what rights are protected by the Human Rights Act 2019 to provide practical advice on how to apply a human rights lens to analyse and develop policy and legislative proposals.

The Human Rights Unit in the Department of Justice and Attorney-General has designed the Workshop specifically for policy officers in DPC's Policy Division. The Workshop will include some small-group activities, which draw on real-life social, environment and economic policy scenarios.

You will learn how to:

  • Critically analyse Human Rights Certificates (HRC) and Statements of Compatibility (SOC) in ATP/ATI Cabinet submissions
  • Give helpful feedback to agencies on how to improve HRCs and SOCs
  • Give helpful feedback to agencies on human rights impacts in policy submissions
  • Learn how to write a good HRC or SOC, if required.
  • Get tips on when to escalate human rights concerns in your briefing notes

All junior and senior policy officers and Directors in Policy Division are strongly encouraged to attend this FREE workshop.

Three sessions are being offered, two face-to-face sessions at 1 William Street, and one on-line session via Microsoft Teams (if you want to attend online, register for 9.30am on Friday, 4 June).

You only need to attend one session. All sessions will run for approximately 3 hours.

You do not need to do any formal preparation prior to the Workshop, but it is recommended that you refamiliarize yourself with the Human Rights Act 2019, and the human rights requirements set out in the Queensland Legislation Handbook (refer section 8).
