Description

Human Rights Community Forum: UDHR 70 years on, time to act?

10 December marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

This landmark document transformed the global face of human rights. In Australia, the ACT was the first jurisdiction with a Human Rights Act (2004). Seventy years after the enactment of the UDHR and almost 15 years since the ACT enacted human rights legislation, join us as we ask:

Is it time for an Australian charter of human rights?

Speakers:

  • Dr Helen Watchirs, President of the ACT Human Rights Commission

  • Mr Christopher Woodthorpe, UN Information Centre (UNIC), Canberra

  • The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, former High Court Judge

  • Professor Gillian Triggs, former President of the Australian Human Rights Commission

  • Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO, CEO of Catholic Social Services Australia

  • Mr Thomas Albrecht, UNHCR Regional Representative

  • Ms Claire Mallinson, National Director, Amnesty International Australia.

Supported by the ACT Human Rights Commission, UNIC, Amnesty International Australia and Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
