Description

Human Rights and Mega Sporting Events

2018 is set to be a huge year for mega sporting events! We've already experienced the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and in a few months time we'll be in the middle of the FIFA 2018 Football World Cup.

Mega sporting events have the unique ability to unite entire nations behind their athletes' quests for greatness. Unfortunately, despite talk of sportsmanship and fair play, not everyone at the games is treated as well as our star athletes. Workers across the globe are being subjected to inhuman treatment and many sporting policies remain discriminatory.

The Event

The United Nations Young Professionals and Australian Lawyers for Human Rights would like to invite you to a night of learning and networking as we delve into the world of human rights and sports. Join with our experts and likeminded young professionals to engage in the issues and look for solutions to problems such as gender inequality and modern slavery that currently blight some of our biggest sporting events! The event will meet at 6 pm for a 6.30pm start with the speakers panel.

Our expert panel includes:

Benedict Coyne, President Australian Lawyers for Human Rights

Jacinta O'Hagan, Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Queensland

Rebecca Buttenshaw, Activism Support Coordinator at Amnesty International

Networking

The Q&A speaking session will be followed by networking with our experts and attendees, drinks and food will be provided on the balcony overlooking Brisbane River and the CBD.

Come talk sports, politics and meet likeminded young professionals!
