Event description

Description

A unique series of books are set to hit our bookshelves, and just like many of our collection items, they are available to borrow, to learn from and to enjoy. Except in this instance, the book will be a real person with a story to share.

The Human Library is a safe and welcoming space where people who may not normally meet can join in respectful conversation about difference and diversity; where difficult questions are expected, encouraged and answered.

Human books

Beulah: Two Countries, many stories

Migrants leave home for many reasons, yet one common theme remains: to make a better life for themselves and their children, and to help those who are left behind. My family comes from a magical, mountainous isle called Ithaca, the smallest island in the Ionian Sea. In 1870, my first family member left this island of sailors and travellers for Brisbane. Later, in 1908, Uncle Vasilis Syrmis arrived, and started cafés in the city.

With the new world came as many opportunities as challenges with a lack of understanding of cultural differences, language barriers and thoughts of Ithaka always on the mind…
‘Keep Ithaka always in your mind
Arriving there is what you destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all” Cavafy 1865-1933
