AACA Competency: Design

Guest Speakers 1: Surroundings - Suzie Wiley & Laura Pascoe.

Originally trained as an architects, Surroundings now consult to architects and clients as human centred design specialists. They come in at the start of a project, design the community consultation, facilitate the process, and translate the outcomes into a Human experience brief for the project.

Guest Speaker 2: Gabrielle Quilliam

After extensive international experience as a nurse and midwife in the NGO and Not For Profit sectors, Gabrielle co founded Hummingbird House Foundation with her husband Paul to build Hummingbird House, Queensland's only children's hospice.

Guest Speaker 3: Chad Brown

An architect, Principal and Design Director at ThomsonAdsett. Having worked across a range of project types Chad had the honour of being the Project Architect for Hummingbird House.

Architecture has a social responsibility. It must be designed around people; our individual preferences, the way we work and live, our dreams and aspirations.

Hummingbird House is Queensland's only children's hospice and was desperately needed. Prior to Hummingbird House, Queensland children affected by a life-limiting condition had little choice when it came to respite and care at the end of their life. We started with the people at the centre of this design: the children, their families and carers who need to make every moment count. We asked them how they felt, what they the needed and  wanted to experience and how the building and landscape could bring them joy during they stay.

Come, hear us share our journey from 3 viewpoints:

  1. Community Facilitation Specialists will share their Human Centred Design approach for Hummingbird House
  2. The Client will share their experiences and their surprise at an outcome that informed more than the building.
  3.  The Architect will reveal what influence this had on the design process.

SONA, EmAGN and Non- Members Welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
