Ignite's HSC English Comprehension and Craft of Writing workshop will provide students studying the HSC English course (Advanced and Standard) with a practical breakdown of the essential skills needed for both Section I of the Common Module (Comprehension) and Module C of Paper 2: The Craft of Writing. The workshop will be run by Ignite's most experienced teacher, Jonny, who specialises in exam strategy and skills for the HSC English course. Given the new structure of the exam, this workshop is a great opportunity for students to learn exactly what is required (and how to achieve it) for each of these sections of the exam.

Structure

The workshop will be split into two parts:

1. Comprehension (Section I: Texts & Human Experiences)

2. The Craft of Writing (Module C)

Comprehension

During the workshop, students will be taught the most efficient way to achieve full marks in response to the various types of questions that could be asked in a comprehension paper. They will learn how to quickly identify techniques used by composers for different text types, how to explain the meaning of those techniques (and/or quotes) in relation to a given question, and how to structure a response for a given mark allocation.

Craft of Writing

The Craft of Writing session will be focussing on how to respond to different stimuli for an imaginative/persuasive/discursive piece of writing and how to structure a band 6 reflection. We will go over various examples and give students an opportunity to practice the skills themselves. 

The Presenters

Jonny achieved an ATAR of 99.80 in 2013 and has since personally taught over 2000 students in both one-on-one and group settings, including multiple engagements at top 20 NSW schools for pre-HSC revision. Jonny has recently completed a Master of Laws at the University of Sydney.

Location - Online

Online (via Zoom). Students will work via zoom and Google Docs, allowing Jonny to provide on-the-spot feedback and edits throughout the day.
