Event description

Description

CrossFit is a worldwide phenomenon. They have over 11,000 affiliates and hundreds of thousands of participants. As health professionals, we are best placed to help minimize the risk of injury and maximize the excellent benefits that can be achieved with CrossFit training - the CDC recommends 5 days per week of moderate intensity exercise with at least 2 of those days including weight training...CrossFit programming fits the CDC recommendations for a healthy lifestyle!

However CrossFit has gotten a bad reputation among health professionals because of their seemingly "devil-may-care" attitude towards stress urinary incontinence and rhabdomyolosis. The reality is that CrossFit actually teaches "mechanics, consistency, intensity" - mastery of the correct technique, consistent replication of sound technique and then increasing the intensity.

This course will attempt to dispel some of the myths of CrossFit training and teach participants some of the basic movements and problems associated with CrossFit and how to modify (aka "scale") a workout. We will then look at approaching the assessment and management of a CrossFit athlete and how to use the same prinicples to treat any athlete using a biopsychosocial framework.

Antony has worked with and treated some of the best CrossFitters in Australia, New Zealand and around the world locally, at Regionals and at the CrossFit Games since 2011 when he started CrossFit. He has taught around the world on this topic and visited over 60 CrossFit gyms in the past 6 years.

Course Objectives:

  • To provide a basic understanding of CrossFit, experience a suitable workout and address common myths about CrossFit
  • To provide participants with the tools to be able to communicate, assess and treat CrossFit athletes more specifically
  • To provide an overview of common CrossFit-related musculoskeletal injuries and options on how to manage them
  • To provide an understanding of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in exercise and appropriate modifications for impact and relatively heavy lifting exercises
  • To provide a way of utilizing "core stability" principles with a test-retest model using performance as a measure of effectiveness
  • To provide an overview of the common movements in CrossFit, sound technique guidelines and appropriate modifications
  • To provide a realistic and practical balance between the biological and the psychosocial aspects in managing the CrossFit athlete, their Coaches and their expectations
  • To provide an understanding of the concepts of #tensiontotask, #spreadtheload, #variabilityisking and #thePFbulletproofroutine

Who is this course for?

This course will be suitable for MSK/Sports/Ortho/WH physical therapists, Athletic Trainers, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Personal trainers, Coaches and other interested health and fitness professionals

Additional information:

This course is VERY practical. Participants will gain the most by coming prepared to do all the practical work. It is suggested that you wear clothing you can exercise in - tight clothing like shorts and a singlet or sports crop top will help for observation during practicals. Whilst all the practical components are optional, the beauty of CrossFit and the method Antony teaches is that everything is scalable meaning all the exercises can be adjusted to suit your level of fitness and accommodate any physical restrictions you have to exercise. Part of the objective of this course is to demonstrate that nearly anyone can do CrossFit. If you have a skipping rope, please bring it!

Important Information For the Seminar:

1. There is assumed knowledge - this you tube video is the first 40mins of my old seminars - if you can watch it (a slide show presentation), it will be helpful. I am working on improving it to make it easier to watch in the future :) http://youtu.be/n3a3naVTxIs - i have a longer version which you can get downloads for on the home page.

2. I will be available to see people that weekend. It is $100/30mins. You can book 30, 60 or 90mins with me.

3. There may be a WOD to start or end the seminar. Whilst this is optional, I do recommend that you come to do it because it will let us see how you move and we can begin to pick out the people who will be good models!

4. Please be prepared to be observed. That usually means guys will often have to take their shirt off or at least wear a singlet and shorts. Girls, if you could wear a crop top or singlet with shorts, that would be great - ideally not a bra that covers the spine between your shoulder blades please. Observing other people is the best way to learn...having said that, we won't force anyone to do anything they are not comfortable doing.

5. Lunch WILL be provided. Please bring any snacks, drinks or supplements you need - there will be breaks during the seminar.

6. A set of colour notes will be provided and there should be pens for everyone. Please come prepared to write notes...there is a lot of information to digest and we have found that writing down the cues that worked for you is a good way of learning and working on your own plan

7. Whilst the seminar strives to address your issues, it does so in a general way. We will do our best to help you with your problems but ultimately, we can't go into as much detail as a full assessment - please be understanding about that.

8. Participation is the best way to learn. I will be calling for volunteers regularly so please be ready! I usually try to ask everyone to volunteer

9. We will be taking photos and videos during the seminar. If you do not want to be photographed or videoed, please let us know. We plan to use these to help promote future seminars and educate people via my blog. Please be assured that I don't ever ridicule people or their form but often phrase it as "Here is John Smith demonstrating “

10. If you have any dietary needs, please let me know by emailing me at antonylo@myphysios.com.au.
