The success of Microsoft Teams as the business collaboration platform of choice is beyond debate – 280 million active users in 5 years is a huge achievement, and a growth of 200+ million in the past 2 years is testimony to having the right solution at the right time.

Understandably, adding PSTN Calling to Teams the next logical step for customers – but what role can traditional Operators play when the app is now selecting the dial-tone? Customers are using Teams for person-person audio and video-calling, inter-company document collaboration and for hosting customer/supplier meetings of all sizes – the uses for Teams are legion.

By adding PSTN Calling, this communication application can easily be extended to provide the day-to-day telephony for the organisation – however for customers, the process is challenging and the options are limited:

  • Choose Microsoft’s own calling plans – they do not necessarily feature the most competitive rates and the availability of numbers from all geographies is not present, but the process is streamlined and simple;
  • Direct Routing provides a tailored solution but it’s difficult to create and manage many diverse environments, add to this the fact that the resources required to implement are expensive and this is reflected in the costs of delivery which restricts the number and size of customers that will get an offer to proceed, some of whom will choose not to.
  • Operator Connect was created by Microsoft to resolve those challenges - a simple, in-app selection of numbers, calling plans and activation services that would see customers live and making calls within minutes. But there is a dependency here: - to allow all customers at scale to ‘go-live’ with Teams Calling, a streamlined customer journey is required that allows for self-guided service selection and activation – allowing businesses to become customers without speaking to a salesperson or being assisted by a delivery resource in a matter of minutes.

To create that experience, to convert that market and capture those customers, a carrier needs to appear on Operator Connect with an automated customer journey that connect customer’s Teams Tenancies with a carrier’s OSS/BSS systems and CTS.
