Description

Overview

Production breakdowns, due to failure of electronic/ process control systems, can occur at any time during their useful lifetime and can be challenging at time to resolve. In these situations, the major goal is to repair and re-start production within the shortest possible time frame.

The aim of this workshop is to provide you with theoretical knowledge and hands on experience for basic level diagnostics and the appropriate actions required to restore the equipment to its normal functionality.

Who should attend:

  • Electricians
  • Technicians
  • Maintenance Engineers
  • Instrument technicians
  • Consultants
  • Students
  • Electric engineers
  • Business owners
  • Machine operators

Topics

The areas covered for investigation will draw from the presenter’s 40 years of experience in the industry. The course will be moulded to be relevant to the participants, who are strongly encouraged to bring case studies and examples of issues that they are having in their own field of expertise.

Here are some of the topics covered:

  • Industrial systems and technologies, building blocks of control systems and their failure diagnostics
  • Special faults finding techniques. Electrical signals - digital and analogue. Sources and modes of failure. Electrical noise. Digital electronics.Dry joints and electrical faults. Symptoms of impending failure.
  • Soldering, basic measurements, diagnostic
  • Communications protocols - RS232/422/485.
  • Ethernet. MODBUS. PROFIBUS.
  • Diagnostic approaches. Breaking the problem down to manageable chunks.
  • PLCs, VSDs, and digital devices.
  • Integrated Systems Networks
  • Major component failures diagnosis such as modules and power supplies
  • Requirements and considerations to swap modules in electrical and control system rack
  • Simple board level experience swapping discrete components and IC level upload/download programs

Outcomes

On completion of this workshop, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the major control system components and how they can integrate together
  • Diagnose major component failures such as modules and power supplies
  • Apply reliable fault-finding techniques consistently recognised to have positive results.
  • Communicate effectively with the engineering team around the procedures related to the fault at hand
  • Replace program holding Integrated circuits
  • Successfully managing control systems communication protocols
