What is How Language Works?

How Language Works: success in literacy and learning is a rigorous course for educators seeking to extend their prior understandings of language and literacy, including how to apply this knowledge in the classroom. It does this is a systematic way by providing a framework or model for looking at how the English language works to make meaning, particularly within schooling contexts.

Who is the course for and what are the prerequisites?

How Language Works is recommended for teachers of years 3-10 but is also highly relevant for teachers to make explicit the language and literacy demands of the SACE.

Course Aims

The course provides teachers and schools with:

  • a model for a whole school literacy framework

  • a model for planning teaching and learning sequences

  • classroom strategies for explicit language teaching which teachers can apply or adapt

  • an in-depth understanding of how language is used in different contexts for specific purposes across the learning areas.

  • specific technical language or "metalanguage" to talk with their students about language and how it works.

Teachers from all learning areas will understand more of the language demands of their fields and will be better able to teach their students how to deal with these demands.
