Description

How Fiction Works with Claire Keegan

What is a story? How does one begin? What does it mean to begin? What is an ending? What is tension? And how and why does tension rise and fall — or not rise at all? What is the difference between tension and drama?
Keegan will take you through the progression of narrative and the structure of paragraphs. She will also demonstrate how time, movement and static work (and do not work) in a piece of fiction.

Participants will be taken through examples using the texts below. This session should be of interest to short story writers, novelists, editors, teachers and anyone working with paragraphs.

Participants will be required to have read The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald; A Misfortune, a story by Anton Chekhov; Reunion, a story by John Cheever; and From Where You Dream by Robert Olen Butler

Format

A one-day course for writers of all levels. More information on program formats and level definitions can be found here.
