Event description

Description

Mums. Can we really have it all? Family, life and career?

Join us over a light lunch as we investigate if the perfect balance between motherhood, work and life is achievable or just a myth.

Join journalist Jolene Laverty in conversation with three high profile Canberra mums. Including social entrepreneur Summer Edwards, international best selling author Karen Viggers and For Purpose founder Caterina Giorgi who will share their experiences and advice on being a mum, career woman and house goddess while retaining their sanity.

Panellists will also share their experiences of being pregnant, including how they hid the early stages of their pregnancies and how they avoided alcohol without tipping off friends and family.

This is your chance to hear from three women from different backgrounds and industries who have continued to develop their successful careers while preserving time for family.

This will be a relaxed event with an opportunity to join and connect with other local mums as they share candid and empowering conversations on career and family.

What’s included in your registration:

  • Entry into the event.

  • A delicious luncheon prepared by Artistic Food.

  • The opportunity to connect with local mums and mums-to-be.

  • Entry into a lucky door prize and giveaways.

Our MC

Jolene Laverty has lived in Canberra for most of her adult life. She spent close to twenty years in radio, which took her from the copper outback of Port Augusta to the sparkling aquamarine waves of the Whitsundays. Jolene is an ANU student, wife of a high-school teacher/rock-musician, and mother to three children who were each born in a different decade. She has recently quit alcohol and although it has been a journey, feels better than she has in years.

Our Speakers

Summer Edwards is a social entrepreneur, community development and evaluation specialist, sustainability advocate and writer, and mama to two young boys. She juggles a portfolio career that includes her community development and evaluation consulting, her sustainable fashion and lifestyle business tortoise & lady grey, and her feminist activism. Passionate about building a meaningful and challenging career which still allows plenty of time for her children, she wants others to have the same. To this end, Summer has recently founded Lead Mama Lead, a social enterprise and leadership network which is designed to challenge the status quo for working mothers. Summer firmly believes that everyone should have access to flexible career-worthy jobs which allow time for family, community activism and creative pursuits outside of work.

Karen Viggers is a wildlife veterinarian and best-selling author of contemporary fiction. Her work incorporates her passion for science and the natural world, and explores challenging environmental issues such as whale strandings and the ethics of wildlife rescue and kangaroo culling. Karen has published three novels: The Stranding, The Lightkeeper’s Wife and The Grass Castle. Her novels have been published in several European countries, including France where more than 400,000 copies have been sold. She lives in Canberra with her husband and two children.

Caterina Giorgi is the founder and managing director of For Purpose, a social business working with purpose professionals to develop their skills, share ideas and work collaboratively to create innovative solutions to complex problems. Caterina has worked in the for purpose sector in a range of policy, advocacy and sector development roles and has presented at national and international conferences. Caterina was a finalist of the 2015 ACT Young Woman of the Year Awards, is a fellow of the Centre for Australian Progress and a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School program Leadership, Organising Change. Caterina lives in Canberra with her husband and young daughter.
