Event description

Description

Dr Helen Whitty's presentation will consider the literacy practices to be made and found in museums, galleries and keeping places. These practices were uncovered in her doctoral study at the University of Technology Sydney, that recruited families as research participants from community agencies assisting marginalised groups. Fieldwork was undertaken at the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New (MONA) and TMAG.

Dr Whitty's research identifies literacies activated within families and their engagement with the display and interpretation of museum collections. The outcomes can enable museums to look anew at their own collections; the contribution different sorts of visitors (including families) can make to their scholarship; deepen the visitor experience and forge new partnerships with literacy providers.

Dr Whitty has a background in town planning, and specialises in developing experiential programs to engage families in place, culture and the applied arts. Her favourite projects were a series of collections-based exhibitions and publications in collaboration with prominent Australian children’s authors at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. She has consulted to the industry, most recently working as content producer on the redevelopment of the Australian Museum’s Search & Discover exhibition, and volunteers with LINC Tasmania as a literacy tutor.

Dr Whitty has been contracted by international publisher ARC Humanities Press for a book based on her doctorate thesis.
