Event description

Description

A novel’s opening paragraphs, even its first sentence, are critical to establishing atmosphere and voice. More importantly, a reader must be encouraged to continue.

In an age of countless distractions, it’s vital that a first chapter gives a compelling sense of where a story, and its characters, may journey. After all, the decision to read (or purchase) a book is often made within the first few pages.

This workshop will examine some of the best literary openings of recent times, with analysis and discussion of what makes them effective. Participants are also asked to bring the first chapter of their current manuscript (if they have one), as there will be an opportunity to share work, and provide feedback. Short writing exercises may also offer a spark for those looking for inspiration.

This workshop is best suited to emerging writers seeking to refine their craft.

Participants must be 18+. Afternoon tea will be provided.
