Event description

Homelessness Week is an annual week that raises awareness of people experiencing homelessness and the issues these people face. It runs from 7-13 August 2017.

Who can become homeless? What leads to homelessness? Where do people experiencing homelessness sleep, eat, access services, find support? No-one can answer these questions better than someone who has been in a homeless situation. To mark Homelessness Week 2017, CHP invites you to join a 'Walk in my Shoes' tour.

CHP supports and trains people who have experienced homelessness to become advocates and educators through the Peer Education and Support Program (PESP). A PESP member will take groups on a walking tour of the Melbourne CBD / inner city, talking them through sites of personal significance.

Date: Wednesday 9 August

Time: 11am - 12.30pm

Meeting point:

CHP, 2 Stanley St, Collingwood (the tour will end at the St Vincent’s Hospital)

All are welcome. The tour may be of particular interest to school groups, volunteer organisations, community group or any individual who wants to gain greater insight into the challenges encountered by those experiencing homelessness.

Contact: Cassandra Bawden, Peer Education Support Program Coordinator, Council to Homeless Persons (Cassandra@chp.org.au or (03) 8415 6210

“My concerns about the possible voyeuristic nature of the tour were quickly allayed, as PESP tour guides explained the nature and issues involved in homelessness and marginalisation in Melbourne.”

“It gave me insight into the realities of life for those who find themselves homeless – it challenged some pre-conceived notions I didn’t even realize I held!”

“This was my first opportunity to have this kind of interaction with someone who has been homeless. This tour helped my learning move from the theoretical to the personal.”

“It was a great opportunity for young people to see what homeless people go through every day/night and how hard it is for them to get access to the things we view as so simple.”
