10am- 12pm knife licence - $20 max 10 participants 9 years and over only

Facilitated by Andy Curry

Andy Currey has spent most of his life exploring the outdoors. He created his company, Sun and Stars Bushcraft, to encourage people back into the outdoors, and to support their re-connection to nature, themselves, and each other.

By learning the ways of nature and re-visiting the lost and forgotten skills of our ancestors, we can achieve a greater understanding of our place in the world today and re-connect with the adventurous side that lies within us all. In doing this we truly discover what we are capable of, and thrive as a result of doing so. Sun and Stars Bushcraft were the proud winners of The Nature Play Community Award at the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF) 2017 Outdoors Awards. Andy has Cert III in Outdoor Rec and Wilderness First Aid and extensive experiance working with groups in outdoor environments.

Does your 9-year old use knives in the ktichen? Then they should probably be using one in the bush as well. This 1.5 hour workshop not only describes knife techniques and purposes, but also includes knife safety, correct protocols, types of knife and what to use in what situation. At the end of the session the children whittle a pair of tent pegs and, time permitting, a Mors Kochanski Try-stick. This stick does not servce a direct purpose in and of itself, but is an examplar of different knife techniques, demonstrating capability and providing the ability to practice a number of different cuts.

12pm-2pm Bushwalk and fire - $20 max 10 participants all ages

Facilitated by Andy Curry

Join us on our bushwalk through Baden Powell Scout Campsite. We have 8 Koalas resident in the park, and whilst they probably won't be seen in the middle of the day, we can see their tracks and scats. We investigate the abundance of flora in the park, including a few native edibles, look for animal tracks and we'll stop for lunch and the kids can try their hand at lighting a fire too to put our billy on. If it's hot, we may even have a play in the stream and see what critters we can find down there too.

2pm-4pm Abseiling - $30 max 10

Facilitated by Andy Curry

Adrenaline junkies can join us on the purpose built,18m abseil tower for the last session of the day. We'll start at the 6m abseil level whilst the group get familiar with the harness and confident in their abilities, then (time permitting) we'll progress to the 12m level for a longer abseil before home time! A great experience for any age! We have had abseilers as young as 4 complete the 12m, but we do tend to get more success with 8's and over.

Stage Make up special effects (10am-12pm)

Facilitated by Catherine Mason

This workshop will be facilited by a highly talented local artist, Catherine Mason, who has been working with Outdoor First Aid Trainers to create amazingly realistic scenarios for their workshops and has previously joined us for a variety of home school art workshops, including Henna tattooing, where Catherine takes participants on a journey of discovery into the ancient roots of this art form to how they can use it to create a meaningful piece for them.

Catherine, attended Aurora Meander Steiner School and Springwood High School, a centre of excellence in the creative and performing arts. Always having been obsessed with visual arts. She has work experience in the film/theatre make up industry.

Catherine has been on a journey with major illness and injury in herself and her closest family and the Depression and Anxiety that often go hand in hand with this for over 10 years, fighting every day to find peace and happiness and health. Through her experiences and reconnecting with art, Catherine has developed an amazing, almost magical way of connecting with her students so that even the most nervous artist blossoms. Art for Catherine is so much more than just a skill. She has a gentle enthusiasm that is contagious, captivating students on a shared journey, learning about art and about themselves along the way. She takes great pleasure in sharing creative pursuits with others, and encouraging everyone to work towards finding their joy.

.You can check out some of Catherines amazing work here:

Catherine has a wealth of practical tips and hints and ways to use everyday items to create amazing effects. I don't want to give away too much about this workshop except to say that it is a magical experience that will leave us wondering if the students have indeed become one with the forest.
