Dr Michael Salter, Associate Professor of Criminology, aims to combine theoretical and empirical insights to inform social work, child protection, therapy, counselling, policing and law. Dr Salter is a Scientia Fellow at UNSW, served as Board Director with The Blue Knot Foundation and The International Society for Study of Trauma and Dissociation and is co-investigator on the Criminology Research Council.

‘Complexity’ in Women’s and Children’s Health, Safety and Service Provision.'

Dr Michael Salter’s presentation focuses on ‘complexity’ in women’s and children’s health, safety and service provision. It will explore the multiple meanings of ‘complex trauma’ and the implications for women’s and children’s wellbeing and safety from violence. Key themes include the link between abuse, trauma, and revictimisation, working with women with high and chronic needs, and managing vicarious trauma and burnout for staff. The outcomes from this session include increased understanding of the traumatic impacts of abuse and violence on women’s health and safety, and current policy and practice challenges to collaborative responses to complex trauma.
