About the workshop

"Almost universally, young people, adults and practitioners embrace this model because when our assessment and formulation are truly holistic and collaborative, our hypothesis for understanding the client’s presentation is more likely to be accurate, engaging and to lead to effective change."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Anthony Hillin

This practical workshop explores strategies for making the assessment and case formulation process meaningful for both the client and practitioner.

A holistic model for assessment, case conceptualisation and treatment will be outlined. This framework expands the biopsychosocial model to include additional domains such as cultural, spiritual, historical, political and environmental factors. Anthony has presented this and similar holistic models to several thousand clinicians in the UK and Australia. The overwhelming feedback has been that the model is appropriate, engaging and helpful for young people and adults. Although the relevant literature highlights the role of these additional domains in distress and healing, many clinicians feel less confident in assessing these factors. For this reason, the workshop will provide opportunities to practice strategies, including a range of creative approaches for addressing these additional domains.

This model can be helpful for a wide range of young people and adults and can be particularly useful with complex presentations, where progress is unusually slow, or when you have a sense that you may have missed something in understanding the client's presentation.

Following on from assessment, the workshop applies a holistic model to case formulation, the gateway from assessment to treatment. You will practice skills in developing an integrated hypothesis that links the presenting problems with the holistic assessment and provides the client and their significant others with an accessible and believable pathway to improvement. Further, you will explore strategies for involving clients in collaboratively developing the overt formulation. This will include strategies to:

  • explore factors contributing to distress
  • discuss hypotheses about the presenting problems, including readiness to change
  • build engagement
  • provide evidence of client strengths and a believable rationale for a hopeful outcome
  • visually represent these assessment and formulation processes, including approaches adapted from eco-maps and the Tree of life technique.

Target audience

This course is designed for clinicians and has been highly evaluated by participants, including psychologists, clinical psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counsellors and occupational therapists.

Learning objectives

This workshop will:

  • demonstrate strategies for making the assessment and case formulation process engaging and meaningful for young people and adults
  • outline key components of the assessment and formulation process
  • provide opportunities to apply the holistic assessment and formulation model to your clients
  • provide brief examples of how this holistic assessment and formulation model can be applied to therapeutic frameworks, such as Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and mindfulness approaches.

Learning methods

A variety of learning methods are employed, including didactic presentations, case-based learning, discussion, demonstrations and group activities. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their own cases.

How you will benefit from attending this workshop

You will have opportunities to:

  • gain experience applying a holistic framework of assessment and formulation to your clients
  • gain experience in using techniques for exploring social, cultural, spiritual, environmental, historical or political aspects of your client’s presentation
  • practice developing overt formulations which are engaging, accessible and which maximise the therapeutic value of the assessment process. This includes giving your client and their significant others greater insight and understanding, evidence for hope of recovery and a sense of the way forward.
