Hobart Data Sharing Legislation Roundtables

A Discussion Paper on the Data Sharing and Release legislation is now open for public comment until Tuesday 15 October 2019. The Office of the National Data Commissioner is hosting a roundtable series during September and October 2019 on the Discussion Paper. We’d like to hear your thoughts on how our policy thinking has changed based on your feedback through earlier roundtables.

Each session will go for two hours and seek your views on:

• The purposes for sharing data, including data sharing for commercial purposes.

• The Data Sharing Principles and risk management, including privacy risks and consent.

• Guidance materials, including the Best Practice Guide to Applying Data Sharing Principles.

• How the DS&R Framework could work for different users in practice.

• The role of the National Data Commissioner.

• Accreditation principles and criteria.

• Higher standards of protections for sensitive data.

• Adequacy of proposed transparency and accountability mechanisms.

• Methods for dealing with complaints, redress options and review rights.

• Enforcement and penalties.

You can read our discussion paper or short summary online if you would like additional detail, though this isn’t necessary reading before the event. We will take time to go through the content during the roundtables, including the key questions for your consideration.

If your preferred roundtable session is booked out, please add yourself to the waitlist for that session. We will contact the waitlisted participants if places become available.

We understand that not everyone can meet with us face-to-face, so we will also be holding a webinar where you can pre-submit questions and have them answered by our panel. We’re expecting to hold this in November 2019, and we will be sending out more information about this event soon.

This won’t be the last opportunity for you to have your say. We welcome written submissions on the Discussion Paper, which can be lodged through our website and we will be holding another series of roundtables when the Exposure Draft of the legislation is released for public consultation.
