Event description

Description

Waverley Cemetery opened in 1877 in the picturesque cemetery design of the mid-to-late 19th century with a layout in geometric style of that similar to be found in Pere La Chaise Cemetery in Paris and London’s Highgate Cemetery. It reflects the changed moral standards and religious philosophies of the Australian community in the Victorian period.

This change in attitude from fear to hope is reflected in the plantings and setting of Waverley Cemetery shown by the evergreen stands of Norfolk Island Pines, evergreens being a symbol of hope, grassy plots and other traditional plants of morning such as rosemary and box. The sweeping vista out to sea contributes to the overall beauty of the cemetery for those resting there, and visitors alike.

The exhibition ‘A Picturesque Garden’ shows the diversity of flora from the opening of the cemetery to the more recent plantings and recommendations for plantings.

Come and celebrate the exhibition opening with an entertaining talk from Greg Ross President of the Friends of Waverley Cemetery.

A free morning tea will also be provided.

Free parking for the first 2 hours when you validate your parking ticket.
