Event description

Description

Of the 58 people named for the streets and squares by the Street Naming Committee on 23 May 1837, only two were women. They were Queen Victoria and Maria Hack (nee Barton). However, there were at least six strong, powerful and influential women standing in support of their husbands, friends and relatives who were promoting the colonial experiment. Their names are etched in history because of their commitment to social and educational reform and the abolition of poverty and ignorance. The three Harriets'; Grote, Taylor and Martineau, along with Elizabeth Rundle, Priscilla Wakefield, Lady Pirie, Elizabeth Fry and others, need to be presented to all South Australians.

Presented by Dr Jeff Nicholas.
