Marrickville and its surround was once a swampland, known as Gumbramorra Swamp by the local Aboriginal people. In 1898, the construction of the steam pumping engine allowed for draining the swamp, resulting in urbanisation of the area we know today. This month’s walking tour will take attendees through this engineering marvel, the oldest remaining pumping station in Sydney, in constant use since 1900.
Attendees should meet at the Sydenham Drainage Pit (entrance via Railway Parade)
