Description

A scenic circular walk on a part of Lake Burley Griffin’s shores that few Canberrans have trodden. Be surprised by this forgotten corner of the Lake and its rich history and heritage values: Griffin’s vision and Roman Cypress Hill, Charlie Weston plantings, Lindsay Pryor arboreta and cork oaks, Yarramundi Inlet Wetlands and Grassland. Discover more about the heritage status of, and imminent plans for, this important area.

Walk Leader: Trevor Lipscombe

Trevor is a life member of National Trust (ACT) and has a long standing interest in Canberra’s cultural and natural heritage. He has led this walk and three others on the Lake’s shores as part of the 2017 Canberra Heritage Festival.

Meet: Barrenjoey car park (free) on the lake side of Lady Denman Drive near the main entrance to National Arboretum. Access via Lady Denman Drive or Tuggeranong Parkway (National Arboretum exit)

Length and terrain: 2 hours/4kms. Some bush tracks and grassy areas, possibly muddy in places after rain. You should be able to walk at least 3 km/hr.

Bad weather: The walk leader will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.
